Last month, Warner Bros. Pictures and director Christopher Nolan announced two new cast members for the upcoming The Dark Knight Rises. Anne Hathaway will play Selina Kyle, and Tom Hardy has been cast to play Bane. In a statement released by Warner Bros., Nolan said, “I am thrilled to have the opportunity to work with Anne Hathaway, who will be a fantastic addition to our ensemble as we complete our story.” Of Tom Hardy, Nolan continued, “I am delighted to be working with Tom again and excited to watch him bring to life our new interpretation of one of Batman’s most formidable enemies.” Hardy worked with Nolan previously on “Inception”.
Catwoman and Bane have each been portrayed in previous Batman installments, both before Nolan’s 2005 hit, Batman Begins. Bane, played by Jeep Swenson, was a minor villain in the dreaded Batman and Robin alongside George Clooney as Batman, Uma Thurman as Poison Ivy, and Arnold Schwarzenegger as Mr. Freeze. The previous portrayals of Selina Kyle have been far more pleasant. Most notably, the “original” Catwoman in the 1960’s TV show Batman, first played by Julie Newmar and followed by Eartha Kitt, and Michelle Pfeiffer’s Catwoman in Batman Returns (1992).
